| 21.12.200911:59 (GMT) | The Border Guard Directorate of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) have been checking the reports on the arrest in Georgia of its member, news agency RIA Novosti reports. Earlier today, Georgian television station Imedi reported that Russian military Vitaly Khripun willfully left a military unit in South Ossetia and crossed into Georgian territory, where he requested political asylum.
According to RIA Novosti, the FSB Border Guard Directorate confirmed that the 25-year-old Vitali Khripun, a native of Poltava region of Ukraine, actually served according to a contract for this department in the territory of South Ossetia, where he arrived in December, 2009. On the night from December 20 to 21, he was a member of a Russian border guard detachment near the village of Perevi. Meanwhile, the fact of the escape of the border guard has not been officially confirmed. The responsible authorities shall specify the circumstances of what happened, news agency marks.
A report on the detention of the warrant officer of Russia's FSB Border Guard Service Vitaly Khripun was transferred by the Georgian side to the FSB of Russia.
