| 18.11.200913:38 (GMT) | Since the beginning of 2009, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has withdrawn from illegal circulation almost 1,000 units of special technical equipment for private removal of data, news agency UNIAN reports, referring to deputy head of the SBU division of maintenance of information security Nikolai Kuleshov. He said 16 persons had been called to account for illegal manufacturing, purchase and storage of special technical means for eavesdropping and video surveillance.
The SBU agents detained a group of persons which used special technical means to illegally gather information on private and business life of citizens in Belaya Tserkov of Kiev area. Marina Ostapenko, the chief of the SBU press centre, told that malefactors have rented a few rooms on the floor where the offices of director and accounting department of one of establishments were located. There malefactors have established special equiment at a NGO which cooperates with the law enforcement bodies. The obtained information was sold to the customer for $1,000.
In one of show-business facilities of Brovarsk district of Kiev equipment of private reception of audio and video information have been withdrawn. According to Ostapenko, the operatives have found out and withdrawn 15 hidden mini video cameras and microphones which "covered" lunch halls, restroom and office of accounting department. The device for muffling signals of radio communication by mobile phones found out by security service officers allowed malefactors to listen and record conversations of visitors who were compelled to make calls from stationary phones. Thus all the information was directed to the office of the managing director and collected on two computers.The SBU added that a draft law had been developed and transferred to the parliament of Ukraine on toughening of responsibility for illegal use of special technical means and their distribution.
