| 04.11.200912:16 (GMT) | Russia welcomed today the re-election of Hamid Karzai as President of Afghanistan, news agencies are reporting. Most of them have been quoting the congratulatory message of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, but the ITAR-TASS has also paid attention to the telegram sent to Karzai by the Russian military intelligence chief.
The head of Russia’s powerful military intelligence service (the Main Intelligence Directorate of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, GRU), Lieutenant-General Alexander Shlyakhturov who marked that Karzai’s re-election was seen by Russia as “positive and stabilising” element in the development of internal political situation in Afghanistan.
“Preservation of the power of Hamid Karzai is seen by us as positive and stabilising element in the development of internal political situation in Afghanistan and that’s why we will support him,” he was quoted as saying by the ITAR-TASS.
