| 02.11.200913:11 (GMT) | German police announced they had arrested a former secret service agent suspected of involvement in the murder 26 years ago of a leading opponent of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito, online magazine Expatica reports.
The 66-year-old Croat, who also holds Swedish nationality, was arrested last week and is now in custody, police said, identifying him only as Luka S. He is "strongly suspected" of being part of a hit squad that murdered Stjepan Durekovic on July 28, 1983 near Munich in Germany where he had sought refuge from the Tito regime, Expatica expands.
Durekovic, a writer who had written texts opposing the Tito regime up until the Yugoslav President's death in 1980, was considered an "enemy of the Yugoslav state" in particular as a result of his intention to take part in a parliament in exile.
He was shot by three Yugoslav security service assassins after being tricked by another agent, a Croat identified as Kronoslav P., who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Germany in 2008.
The murder of Durekovic came against a background of political attacks targeting Croats in exile in Germany, online magazine adds.
