Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius speaking on radio Žiniu Radijas today said he did not exclude the possibility that the requirement of the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite to revocate Ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia Mecis Laurinkus might be connected with the fact that Laurinkus did not tell the truth about the work of the secret CIA prison in Lithuania.
Prime Minister Kubilius said that he did not have any information that such prison had been in Lithuania, but he had no undisputed evidence that there was no such prison. "I can not say either yes or no", said Kubilius, responding to the question whether the alleged Al-Qaeda terrorists were contained in Lithuania.
"Ambassador Mecis Laurinkus (former head of the Lithuanian State Security Department and the current Ambassador of Lithuania in Georgia) publicly insisted that there was no such jail and could not be [in Lithuania]. Perhaps the results of the parliamentary investigation have shown some aspects that are more knowledgeable to the President. Therefore we can not exclude that this was one reason why the President considered that a person who knowing certain information publicly refuses to speak the truth, could not hold the office of ambassador," said the Prime Minister of Lithuania.
Presumably in connection with the scandal over alleged existence of a secret CIA prison in Lithuania, the State Security Department (VSD) Director Povylas Malakauskas has resigned from his office and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite demanded the government to withdraw the Ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia and the former VSD head Mecis Laurinkus from Georgia.
Citizens should be careful making phone calls abroad – Security Police of Estonia
The Security Police (Kapo) of Estonia recommends the population to be careful in mentioning "sensitive topics" in overseas phone conversations or internet communication because foreign intelligence services have expanded opportunities to monitor these communications, Tallinn-based newspaper Eesti Express reports.
Starting from December 1, the Swedish National Radio Protection Administration (FRA) have obtained free access to foreign communications data across Sweden. It directly refers to Estonia as a part of the Estonian population of telephone and Internet communications have been taking place directly or indirectly via Sweden, Estonia's Competition Board official Rivo Mets told the paper.
For instance, the company Tele2 initially redirects communications of Estonian citizens with foreign countries to Riga, then via the sea cable to Sweden and then to the rest of the world.
Communications operators have not found it necessary to warn about the intelligence activities which began three weeks ago, Eesti Ekspress points out. Even the Telekom company which basically owns the Swedish company TeliaSonera keeps quiet. Elion, the Telekom subsidiary, explains that the laws do not oblige them to inform their clients about what, how and by whom have been listened in Sweden.
"The people who are not involved in violance of laws or criminal activity have nothing to worry about," says the press secretary of Elian, Lilian Viirmaa.
She does not agree that the FRA's work should be something special. "In today's world, when we are threatened by terrorism, all this is inevitable in order to ensure general security," the paper cites Viirmaa.
